Fruit of the day: Avocado

My mom prepared a sweet treat for the family today. She mixed the cut avocado fruit with evaporated milk and sugar. That simple...but the result was awesome! I had two cups of it! Try it!

We have lots of this fruit, again coming from our backyard where my mom usually plants fruit bearing trees like Guyabano and Duhat.

Vegetable for the day: Lettuce

Lettuce is said to be a fat free, low calorie food and is good for a well balanced diet. It is a valueable source of Vitamin A and folic acid.
Our family usually eats it fresh with no added dressing. We match it with fried foods like the common burger and fish fillet. A good friend also taught us to add whole corn kernels and century tuna with it, for a change. He he!
However, there are times when we are hesistant in buying a lot of this vegetable because of its relatively high price. Compared to other native vegetables in the Philippines, a kilo of lettuce is very expensive.
I remember buying a lot of lettuce when I went to Baguio where a kilo of lettuce used to be 20 pesos only. Now, we get to buy if for as much as 60 to 80 pesos per kilo in our local super market.

Tahooooooo!!!

Do you miss hearing "Tahoooooooooo!?!?!"

Well, I don't. Every morning, a regular "manong" sells taho in our neighborhood and my father makes sure we all have a cup of the sweet taho from him. Each cup costs around 10 pesos. The price, of course, depends on where you're buying it.

Our local taho is safe to eat. We've proven it a lot of times. People are usually afraid of buying taho from local vendors because they fear having stomach problems. What we advise them is to avoid buying taho in the afternoon, when there is a possiblity that the taho is no longer fresh. Try buying it early in the morning when it's still very hot.

Some vendors accept simple requests from good customers such as request for extra/additional sweetener and "sago." Just be careful not to add too much sweetener or you'll make yourself prone to tonsilitis. He he he!

Fried Tilapia

Fried Tilapia for lunch.
Fried Tilapia is best eaten with fresh tomatoes (just like the salted egg) and added with a mixture of calamansi plus soy sauce.
Tilapia is my favorite fish because it doesn't have a lot of bones in it. You won't have to worry if your child wants to eat it on his own. He can easily take the bones off, just like my 5 year old nephew, Ren. He loves tilapia too! Funny, he'd even trade it with Lechon.

While cooking the Tiplapia, just make sure the oil is already very hot before putting the fish in it or else, the fish will surely lose it's lovely form and parts of it will most probabaly stick to the pan. This happened to our high school group in Canossa when we had our Home Economics class. He he he!

Fruit of the day: Pineapple

Fresh pineapples from Tagaytay!

Today, for our daily dose of fiber, we have the sweetest pineapples of Tagaytay!

We also have pineapples from Calauan, Laguna which are equally sweet!

When it's not pineapple's season, we buy the canned pineapple fruit, instead. We love Del Monte's canned pineapple. It is said to have the ability to help our body fight or prevent the "Big C."

Corn! Corn! Corn!

It's snack time! And what do we have? Taadaah! Corn! Corn! Corn!

Yes, it's corn, but not the "not-so-sweet-corn". This is the "oh-my-gosh-it's-so-sweet-corn".

We commonly call it Japanese corn, in our place. I dunno if it's really from Japan or wherever. The important thing is that it's really very sweet! I love this sweet corn! Sometimes, people put some salt and dairy creme or margarine on it. But when it's this sweet, I guess, you won't have to do anything but eat all of it!

Ren, here, however, is eating a different corn. This is the "not-so-sweet-corn" added with powdered cheese to taste better. It costs around 20 pesos per large cup and is usually sold by carts. Kids love this treat a lot. I got to eat a lot of this before when I was still in high school. I used to buy in small cups and I get to eat it while its very very hot. Actually, just like pasta, corn is eaten best when it's freshly cooked.

What's for Breakfast?

Today, our family had garlic rice and salted eggs for breakfast. Mom tells me to stop eating salted eggs because she believes it's causing pimple breakouts, but what can I do? I love salted eggs and I'm definitely starving from my 10 hours of sleep. Ha ha ha!

The smell of the garlic rice was really enticing. The moment I knew it was already cooked, I hurried to the kitchen and invited everyone to join me for breakfast. However, I think something's missing from the table...Mmmm...Aha! I think we forgot to have fresh tomatoes! I'll try not to forget that next time.

What I love about this combo is its affordability. We can have this anytime, anywhere. I actually remember my good old boss in Fuller Life, way back in year 2007. He used to prepare this for us, his staff, whenever he goes hungry at work and wants everyone to have a good meal. In a bowl, he mixes the salted eggs and the fresh tomatoes and that's it. I used to have two cups of rice because of that. It's oh so good!

P.S.

Sir Omar, wherever you are, I thank you for your kindness and the good food! Cheers!

Sweet cheese sticks

Meet one of my favorite sweet treats: Cheese sticks from Josam's bakery. I bought 20 pieces of this last night before Elvin and I went home from the Santa Cruzan. I shared it with Tomomi and Ren and they both loved it too. They were even fighting over how many pieces of cheese sticks each of them had. Ha ha ha!

I get to buy this every Sunday, after mass, because the bakery is just right outside the church's gate. The bakery is usually filled with church-goers buying bread before they head home. Fortunately, at that precise time last night, we didn't have a problem getting the attention of the sales woman because we were her only customers.
